I was just trying around to monetize my site http://www.belgaumpages.com which runs on wordpress. Since it is an wordpress multi user platform , i could not get a way to place ads on the member blogs easily. Searching for an plugin to do that went in ruin. Finally after months of analysis i found an easy way place ads on buddypress sites. In one way this may not be similar to normal plugins, you can even consider it to be a buddypress hack. For those who don’t know what is buddypress , here is an overview :
” BuddyPress will extend WordPress MU and bring social networking features to a new or existing installation.
BuddyPress is a suite of WordPress plugins and themes, each adding a distinct new feature. BuddyPress contains all the features you’d expect from WordPress but aims to let members socially interact. ”
Buddypress Ads Plugin :
This plugin will allow you to publish ads through your buddypress site(with wordpress mu) Supports multiple ad networks including adsense , adbrite and many more. Just replace the ad code below with your own ad code. This is the easiest way to monetize to wordpress mu and buddypress community.
You can download the plugin here : Download Now !
Installation :
–> BuddyPress Admin bar should be enabled site wide.
–> Replace the ad code in bp-custom.php file with your ad code.
—> Copy the bp-custom.php into your /wp-content/plugins directory
—> Done !
I hope this plugin make the tasks of many people who are looking around to monetize budypress site 🙂

Hmm… does it have to display the ads on the top under the bar? I really don't like the placement. I'd rather have something that integrates ads into the posts and widget bar and title area.
sandeephegde says
Dear Cynthia,
It is a bit difficult to do that on all your member blogs. For example : The theme chosen by each member blog may gone one vary again. My idea of placing ad on the top was not distract the content of the members site. I got this idea from the ads displayed from Godaddy Free Hosting(provided with domain).
However if you use adbrite (Full page ad, link ads), kontera, text link ads etc you ads will be displayed site wide along with the content.
Thanks for the comment, i will think about implementing what you said in coming days 🙂

Hi Sandeep,
Your plugin doesn't seem to work smoothly yet, but thank you for starting something. You have the only adsense plugin available for buddypress and it is driving me crazy.
I hope you figure it out soon.

Dear Kale,
I would require some details from you so that I can further diagonise the problem.
1. What is WordPress MU version you are using?
2. What is the Buddypress Version you are using?
3. What other plugins have you installed? (You can try disabling all other plugins, and confirm me the error is due to Buddypress Ads Plugin only)
I have been using the same plugin over http://www.belgaumpages.com which is a live site.
sandeephegde says
Dear Kale,
I have just verified that the plugin is working fine with WordPress MU 2.9.1 and BuddyPress 1.1.3
Please cross check if you have altered anything else. Also try disabling all other plugins and use only Buddypress Ads for a while to test the correct functioning of Buddpress Ads plugin..
For any help leave me a comment 🙂

Hi Sandeep,
I'm actually about to get a premium theme and I need something that would fit it, it will be an absolute nightmare if I have to input adsense code for each page.
Any ideas on how I can incorporate image ads and in post ads into this theme:
http://buddypressthemes.org/
A good portion of my website is having the ability to earn ad revenue.
Let me know if you have any ideas.
Thank you,
Kale

Dear Kale,
Buddypress Ads plugins will assist you to display any kind of ad into your complete site(including member sites). But if it is an banner ad(Google Adsense) the ads will displayed on the top portion of everypage, pushing down the remaining content below the ads. However if you use adbrite (Full page ad, link ads), kontera, text link ads etc you ads will be displayed site wide along with the content.
Also while choosing a theme make sure that the theme supports the latest version of Buddypress. As per to my knowledge many of the buddypress themes are unable to cope-up with the develepment rate of Buddypress! Using older theme, one that is not compatible with the version of BP that you're running, may result into problems.
Personally I'm using the default theme over http://www.belgaumpages.com which goes in accordance to the Buddypres Developments.
My suggestion is to use Google Ads within Adbrite.Under Pricing Options choose “Using Other Ad network” then insert the “Google Adsense Code” into the box(Choose the appropriate cpm to beat). This will make your google ads getting displayed for banner ads, while adbrite displays fullpage ads and Inline Ads. I believe this can be a good revenue strategy for a site powered by Buddypress.
Let me know if you have any further queries.

I installed it as in the instructions but nothing shows up the file bp-bustom is in the /plugins/buddypress directory, any ideas?
sandeephegde says
Dear Cogmios,
Upload the bp-custom.php into your /wp-content/plugins directory (not /plugins/buddypress ) Alternatively automatic web based installation should also work fine.
Let me know if you have any further queries.
